Fresh biopsy specimen: Gastric antral biopsy in a sterile container, on a sterile gauze moistened with sterile, nonbacterialstatic saline. Place in a sterile container, leak-proof.
Specimens should be received within 24 hours (or less) postcollection to ensure organism viability.
When obtaining biopsy specimens, substances such as cimetidine and benzocaine, which inhibit growth of H. pylori should be avoided. Contamination of biopsy forceps with gluteraldehyde also inhibits growth.
Only collect Monday - Friday

10 mL of blood in an Isolator (TM) tube only. Invert several times to mix. Tube must be at least half full. Volume is important to obtain accurate results.  Keep at room temperature.
Other anticoagulant tubes are not acceptable for culture specimens.

BONE MARROW: Collect marrow in an Isolator tube (1.5 mL),  SPS blood collection tube or sterile container. No minimum volume. Invert several times to mix.
Other anticoagulant tubes are not acceptable for culture specimens.
Direct smear exam not included if sent in Isolator tube.  Collect Time is required for each specimen submission.

Test is performed daily. Smear results within 24 hours. Final culture results in 42 days.

If PCR testing for M. Tuberculosis is desired, please call AFB lab at 257-3493. This test is performed by a reference laboratory.

Use sterile saline. Do NOT use tap water for gastric washings. Place into sterile tightly sealed container and transport immediately. Specimen must be received in lab within 30 minutes of collection.

Submit Tissue or Aspirate aseptically in a sterile leak-proof container. For cutaneous ulcer, collect biopsy from under margin of lesion. Swabs are highly discouraged, and only considered if biopsy or aspirate are not obtainable.  Refrigerate at 4 degrees C.
Order Acid Fast Culture, Tissue on tissue specimens. Order AFB Culture on swabs and aspirates.
Collect Time is required for each specimen submission.
Test is performed daily. Smear results within 24 hours.  Final results in 42 days.
All first time clinical specimens that demonstrate the presence of AFB on smear will be reflexed to PCR testing for M. tuberculosis. A negative test result does not exclude the presence of M. tuberculosis, correlation with culture results is recommended.

Do NOT refrigerate BLUE TOP tubes for coagulation testing.
